Countdown to your Thailand wedding

You’ve been in a whirl of activities lately–a wonderful whirl, but dizzying nonetheless. You just got engaged, and now it’s time to start planning the wedding. But where do you even start? If you’ve decided on a destination wedding in Thailand, here’s a guideline and timetable to help you get organised and ensure a stress free wedding event:

Intimate or elaborate?

The amount of planning you need to do depends on what kind of wedding you wish to have–both in terms of size and budget. If you decide on an elopement, all you may need is a few weeks to decide on the date, arrange your wedding package, and make your travel arrangements. With no guests (or very few) to consider, you need not worry about catering and accommodations. However, if you’re planning a more elaborate wedding, you will need a little more time.

Set the Date

The peak season for travelers in Thailand is from November to February, with a secondary high season in July and August. If you are planning your wedding for the peak season, it is best to make your travel and wedding arrangements well in advance to make sure you reserve the dates you want.

Once you’ve decided on the size and date of your wedding, you can zero in on a timeline to make sure everything gets done on time:

12-18 months – Contact your wedding planner and confirm dates, venues and accommodations. Choose your bridesmaids and groomsmen; prepare a guest list and send out “save-the-date” notices.

4-6 months – Shop for wedding clothes and honeymoon wardrobe. Arrange details of the wedding with your planner: officiant, type of ceremony and reception, as well as timeline and sequence of events. Confirm venues for rehearsal dinner and/or post-wedding brunch. Confirm dates and details for the honeymoon. Choose menus for the reception and other gatherings; select flowers and music. Confirm requirements and appointments for securing marriage license and registration. Mail invitations.

2-3 months – Purchase wedding rings and favours for bridal party. Finalise menu, wine list, lighting, table settings. Confirm arrangements for transportation and video or photography.  Finalise hair and makeup appointments for your bridal party with your planner.

1 month – Have a final clothes fitting. Prepare reception seating list and final headcount for all events. Ship any items you are sending beforehand. Make arrangements for home care while you are out of town. Start packing a week before your departure date.
