Thai Wedding Flowers

Given its tropical climate, Thailand  offers a diverse range locally grown flora suitable for a wedding – all year round. You could plan an entire wedding theme around the country’s exotic flowers, such as the quintessentially Thai lotus and jasmine, or you can elect to decorate your wedding venue and bridal bouquet with the colourful hues of roses or orchids. Here are some wonderful Thai blooms that Creative Events Asia  recommends:

Lotus
Known as ‘bua’ in Thai, the tranquil lotus is among the most common native flowers of Thailand. An aquatic plant with white or pink flowers, the lotus plays an important role in everyday life, given its historic, cultural and religious significance. As such, it figures prominently in Thai wedding ceremonies and as part of the wedding décor.

Jasmine
Jasmine flowers are lauded for their distinctive, heady perfume. In Thailand, the delicate flowers are often made into garlands that are presented and worn at festive occasions and important rituals, such as weddings. In this context, they symbolize the fragrance of marriage and beauty of life.

Rose

Roses have been long grown in Thailand for both export and local consumption. Given their universal association with love, roses are always a popular choice for weddings. Here, you have your pick of a number of colours, from the conventional red, pink and white to lavender, orange and peach. Whatever hues you choose, these flowers are always in vogue, perpetually exuding a sense of elegance and romance.

Orchid
There are over a thousand species of orchids in Thailand, with a range of colours, fragrances, shapes and forms. Like roses, orchids are an important export industry and many varieties are cultivated commercially. For weddings in Thailand, orchids are ideal for dramatic centrepieces, from a cascading bunch of large white orchids to brilliant purple blooms suspended in water-filled glass vials.

Gerbera
In yellow, orange, pink or red, gerbera daisies definitely add a touch of vibrancy and casual elegance to any celebration. Gerberas can vary in shape and size. For weddings, large, hardy flowers with thick stems are perfect for bouquets, flower torches or floral displays.

Frangipani
Also known as Plumeria or ‘leelawadee’ in Thai, the frangipani features an exquisite scent amid a simple, eye-pleasing form – whether they are blooming on trees, displayed as a cut flower display or floating in a decorative bowl of water. In Thailand, white and yellow varieties are the most common, but the flowers also come in pink.
